Formation of Kurnell Peninsula One million years ago Kurnell was an island. The Georges, Cooks and Towra Rivers converged and drained south-eastwards to reach the ocean at Bate Bay, effectively isolating from the then mainland an area that today we call Kurnell Peninsula. About 15,000 years ago, as the sea reached its present level, sediment filled the channels and forced the rivers to change their courses. The deepest section of the ancient river channel now lies 100 metres beneath the dunes of the southern end of the peninsula. Towra Point is actually a delta formation of relict mud and sand between the ancient rivers |
