Over-Development in the Shire

by Gordon Hocking

The Shire Housing Strategy was adopted by Council on 20 January 1997, after community consultations. The Department of Urban Affairs and Planning accepted the strategy as part of Council's LEP.

Building activity exceeded the strategy projections before the ink was dry on the paper.

After considerable community disquiet about OVER-DEVELOPMENT, Council planners prepared
'Revised Housing Strategy Projections' in November 1998.

Note that ALL revised population projections predict Shire population peaking within 3 years
and then declining fairly sharply. The original Strategy predicted Shire population would peak in 2010.

Note that ALL of the revised projections result in greater numbers of dwellings than the original Strategy.
