Total Environment Centre - Airing Public Transport

Sydney is a city in the midst of a transport crisis. Choking under chronic air pollution and worsening traffic jams. Major inequities exist with disadvantaged residents throughout Western and Southern Sydney, denied access to efficient and reliable public transport and forced into ever increasing car dependency. Meanwhile governments remain locked into a cycle of building more and more roads.

In response, Total Environment Centre (TEC) invites you to attend a special community forum in one of the worst affected areas, Southern Sydney, to explore problems in each area and identify public transport solutions.

The recommendations will be presented to the Government, Opposition and other parties for consideration in their transport policies for next year's NSW State Election. However, the event will be strictly non-political.

The problems:
  • Air quality goals regularly exceeded with alarming levels of Ozone and fine particle pollution.
  • Inequality of access to effective and reliable public transport.
  • Worsening traffic congestion and loss of urban amenity.

The solutions:

  • Bringing forward key public transport infrastructure.
  • Promoting increased use of rail for freight transport.
  • Extending public transport concessions to private buses.
  • Developing public transport policies to include localised approaches, city-wide strategies, integrated land use and sustainability.
