International Conservation Agreements

The Wetlands of Towra, a rare ecosystem, are the only ones within the Sydney region accorded special protection under the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, commonly referred to as the Ramsar Convention. The significance of Towra Point is so great that two other international agreements also recognise it, the Japan Australia Migratory Bird Agreement and the China Australia Migratory Bird Agreement. Preservation of the Towra Wetlands is critical to threatened bird, fish and shellfish species. The Wetlands are a vital link in the worldwide chain of habitats used by many migratory waders and shorebirds.
