The Village Grows Up

Marton Park

With the interests of the young people at heart, the Kurnell Progress Association approached Sutherland Council with a proposition for setting aside some land for a playground. In 1945 Council acquired a triangular shaped block of marshland between Captain Cook Drive, Solander Street and Cook Street, and reclaimed a portion of it by draining it and filling it with rubble and soil. In conjunction with the Captain Cook Landing Place Trust commemoration of the anniversary of Cook's birth, the playing field was dedicated and named Marton Park, after Captain Cook's birthplace, by Justice Ferguson on 27 th October 1951.
