Council Wetlands

In order to improve the water quality in Woolooware Bay, Sutherland Shire Council in 2000 completed a constructed wetland on the corner of Captain Cook Drive and Elouera Road.

Stages of 'construction' included wetland shaping followed by connection of the outlet pipe and rock wall which leads to Woolooware Bay. The final stages undertaken in late 2000 involved infilling the former stormwater channel (that ran parallel to Captain Cook Drive and was the former pathway for water to discharge from the drainage pipe to the bay) and finishing the final bank gradient.

A gross pollutant trap (GPT) was also constructed so that all water entering the wetland through the main discharge pipe is screened before entering the wetland.

Vegetation was also planted along the banks of the wetland and on the island.

Since construction, Bream fingerlings have been seen in the wetland and the ducks seem to be enjoying the new environment.
