Coastal Solutions 2003 is a follow-up event
to the Estuary Forum 2002 which documented the issues
and challenges faced in managing coasts and estuaries
and one estuary in particular: Port Hacking.

What is the goal of the Coastal Solutions Forum 2003?
The aim of the forum is to generate innovative
ideas for a radical improvement in estuary and coast management.
Traditional regulatory approaches are generally failing
to halt the decline in the quality of coastal foreshore
and submarine environments - urban encroachment, seagrass
loss, gradual loss of biodiversiy, and the loss of opportunities
for non-harmful recreation, are endemic.
The Southern
Catchment Management Board and Sutherland
Shire Council, working in partnership with Port
Hacking Protection Society and Sutherland
Shire Environment Centre, want to explore how we can
create radical strategies to secure radically better results
for our estuaries and coasts:
- Can we get regulatory approaches that will work,
but without demanding resources that are just not
available?
- Is it possible to apply different market and ownership
rights ideas to get measureably better outcomes for
sustainablity?
- Can we find different funding and resourcing approaches
that will work a lot better?
- How can we make more efficient use of existing ideas
that work?

forum?

If you participate, you will come away with:
- A clear and concise suite of strategies, outlined
by experts, and supported by specific illustrations
of their application in one threatened estuary (Port
Hacking);
- Your own ideas far better developed, through practical
engagement in shaping a strategy using a host of the
most up to date ideas for natural resource strategy;
and
- A great network of experts and contacts on whom
you can draw to shape your own strategies for your
own coastal or estuarine area.
